28 Jul 2008 Race Report - Rounds 15 & 16
 | Double Six Racing's local circuit, Oulton Park in Cheshire hosted Rounds 15 & 16 of the 2008 Clio Cup Championship.
Free Practise
Friday free practise set the scene for the weekend in terms of the weather. The drivers faced very hot conditions throughout the two sessions. Rob Boston, the 2008 Race Star winner and Double Six Racing driver had been ill leading up to the weekend and on Friday with the heat beating down he wasn't feeling his usual self. During Free Practise Rob set a time good enough for only 21st place - not a position Rob has been accustomed to recently. Hopes of a decent result for the weekend were low.
Qualifying Qualifying took place on Saturday morning in front of a good sized crowd. Oulton Park always attracts a healthy crowd for the British Touring Cars and this weekend was no different.
The first half of qualifying went well with Rob in 8th place. The majority of the grid came in and changed to new tyres and the times started to tumble. Unfortunately Rob could not keept his place in the order and dropped down to finish 17th on the grid for Race One. Race Two starting position is determined by the 2nd fastest laps and Rob was palced in 16th position for the start of Race Two.
Race One
Starting from 17th on the grid Rob got a great start closing up on the row in front. Unfortunately the row in front went 3 abreast into the first corner leaving Rob with nowhere to go, even though he was much faster he had to settle for following them through the corner. After the first lap Rob had picked up one place leaving him in 16th position. There then followed two safety car laps following an incident on the track. After racing resumed Rob picked up the pace and capitalised as Pyper and McDowall had a coming together - Rob was no up to 14th at the end of lap 5. On lap 6 Ridley-Holloway and Gaffney had a problems with there cars with Rob gaining another two positions. On lap 10 Hodgetts and Rice had problems with their cars and Rob gained another two places. Now in 10th position Hunter, Rob and Small were in a three way fight for 9th position. On the last lap Rob outbraked himself allowing Small to nip through on the inside and leaving Rob in 11th position. The team were happy with the result coming from 17th to 11thand gaining some valuable points as the fight for a top 10 position in the championship hots up.
Race Two
Race Two took place immediately after the first Touring Car race of the weekend and was broadcast live on ITV4. The racing didn't dissappoint. Starting from 16th on the grid and in determined mood following his 11th place finish in Race One Rob made a good start. Throughout the course of the first lap Rob made up 4 places leaving him 12th after the first lap. Coming out of Old Hall Gaffney spun hit the barrier and came back across the track - the whole team stood watching open mouthed preying for the best. It was a narrow escape with Glew and Sheperd taking the brunt of the accident and ending there race. Rivett, a member of the 2009 Race Star panel of judges, managed to avoid the accident but dropped a number of places to end up behind Rob and Rice. Rob was no in 9th position with Rice and Rivett hot on his tail. Rivett despatched of Rice and now Rivett was chasing down Rob. With some excellent defensive work Rob managed to hold off Rivett but lost time on the group in front. mcDowall had an off on lap 12 moving Rob up to 8th. Coming across the line Rob punching the air was very happy with the result after a dissappointing start to the weekend.
Rob is still in 13th position in the championship but has closed up to within a few points of the drivers in front it is sure to be an exciting end to the season.
There is now a break of 5 weeks before the Clio Cup is back in action at Silverstone at the end of August as part of the British Touring Car support package. |
