02 Sep 2008 Race Report - Rounds 17 & 18

Silverstone National Circuit hosted Rounds 17 & 18 of the Clio Cup Championship on 30th and 31st August. Having driven the circuit in the Clio race car during the Official Championship test at the beginning of the season Rob Boston knew what to expect.

Free Practise
Dry sunny weather was in store for the whole of Friday practise and the team prepared the car ready for action. Rob and the team reviewed some of the data from teh test day and we knew that the pace would be there - it was just what the other drivers did that mattered.

Rob put in some great times and for the majority of the time was lying in 7th/8th place. At the end of the session Rob had slipped to 9th, 0.929 seconds of the leader, Paul Rivett. Paul will again be instructing in the Final of the 2009 Race Star and helping to decide who the winner will be. Rob was confident he could go quicker in the afternoon session.

Session Two got off to a great star lying 3rd for the first part of the practise. As soon as Rob came in to change for some different tyres the rest of the grid picked up the pace leaving Rob 14th on the exit of the pits. Some storming laps later and Rob had produced a best time of 1:06.075, just 0.144 seconds off the pace of Carl Bradley to end the session in 4th place and leave the team and Rob very happy.

Qualifying
Hopes were high for grabbing two good grid positions for the race - we had been in this position before.

Rob got on the pace straight away and was lying in 3rd position, just 0.16 seconds off the lead when he came in for a change of tyres. Returning to the action the Race Star winners car had dropped to 20th. Rob put in a superb effort in the middle of qualifying to acheive 7th position before coming back into the pits for some more tyres. Going back out onto the track the Double Six Racing car was in 11th position. After an initial slow lap Rob put in his best time of the weekend so far, 1:05.930 to jump up to 6th, just 0.24 off the pace. After an equally impressive lap Rob improved his time to 1:05.880, leaving him in 5th position, just 0.1 seconds off pole and the best qualifying position to date. I was even better for Race Two as Rob's second best time was good enough for 4th on the grid for the televised race on Sunday afternoon.

Race 1
Starting in 5th position Rob was a little nervous. He had never started so high in his short racing career and was keen to make a good start and capitalise on the high starting position. Unfortunately the nerves got him a little and he bogged down on the start allowing the two cars on the row behind past him. Rob slotted into 7th place and kept pace with the guys around him. On lap 5 Robinson made a move and made it stick to take 7th place and demoting Rob to a slightly disappointing 8th place. On lap 15, Lanik ran wide allowing both Robinson and Rob through on the inside. It stayed that way to the end of the 18 lap race leaving Rob in 7th place at the finish. Rob was dissappointed by the result and knew he could do better in the next Race.

Race 2
The weather had changed from the previous day with the rain poring down and creating rivers across the track. The 2008 Race Star winner was starting his first ever wet race and struggling to get away meaning that a repeat of the first race happened and two cars came past before the first corner. With extremely ricky conditions everyone was struggling to stay on the tarmac. At the next corner cars were sliding all over the place and as two ran wide Rob took the chance on the inside to grab 4th place back. Coming out of the last corner Rob did very well to keep the car on the track as it slid sideways but he managed to hold onto 4th place. Over the next couple of laps Rob built a comfortable gap back to 5th position whilst the top 3 were 6.5 seconds up the road. It was quite a lonely race for Rob as he spent most of the race on his own. Excitement happened on the next to last lap when Hodgets in 3rd lost it coming onto the National straight. Unfortunately for Double Six Racing and Rob he managed to collect and get back out in front. Rob crossed the line for his best result of the season in 4th place and extremely happy.

Rob is now 12th in the championship with two races left he is just 18 points off the top 10. Double Six Racing are 9th in the teams championship.

Rob and the team cannot wait until Brands Hatch on 20th/21st September to complete an impressive 2008 season.
