23 Apr 2007 Rockingham - Round 2
 | Rockingham - Round Two Bentley, the Clio Cup Scholarship winner, re-acquainted himself with the Rockingham circuit having tested there last month. After a fairly disappointing test at Thruxton the week before, Bentley took to the congested track for the 45 minute free practise. With all 40 cars trying to get to grips with the circuit an empty track was at a premium so 21st out of the 40 was reasonable.
A few changes to the car’s set-up saw Bentley improve in the group 1 qualifying stage finishing only 0.6 secs behind the fastest in a brilliant 8th place. Bentley’s pace was even better than his instructor from the Scholarship, Phil House, which shows he is learning fast and we picked the right person.
On the first lap of the Qualifying race there was an incident and Bentley slipped to 12th. The safety car came out and stayed out for 3 laps. This was only an 8 lap race and so, if Bentley was to improve, he was to drive hard for the few remaining laps. And he did just that passing nearly a car a lap to finish a well respected 9th and thus earn him an 18th place start on the grid for the Championship race on the Sunday.
Sunday and what a race! With a fantastic start and a dose of luck and skill, Bentley ended lap 1 in 10th place from 18th. By lap 5 he was in 9th and pushing Benham. An excellent Clio Cup move on Benham gave Bentley 8th place. With the excitement reaching boiling point in the Double Six Racing camp, the race was cut short due to ITV showing the 3rd BTCC race live.
At the end of the day a jubilant Bentley was pleased with his performance having also done the 5th fastest lap in the race. He got a well deserved pat on his back from Team Manager Marc Nelson. |
