04 Jun 2007 Croft - Round 4
 | Croft - Round FourThe North Yorkshire International Race Circuit, which is being used for part of the scholarship search for next years driver, was the scene for the next round of the Clio Cup Championship.
Bentley was in a confident mood following his test there a few weeks prior to the meeting. Having not taken part in the Friday's practising, Bentley had just a single 15 minute qualifying session to re-acquaint himself with the circuit. At the end of the short session Bentley had qualified on the 4th row in 8th place just 0.843 seconds of pole man Phil House, who is one of the Scholarships instructors. Bentley was slightly disappointed with his final position as towards the end of the session he ran wide at Sunny In on what would have been an even quicker lap.
In the qualifying race Bentley managed to get ahead of Speller into 7th and then proceeded to have a good battle with him. It took 5 laps of close action for Speller to finally get past and with Dymond crashing out at Clerbaux on the 2nd lap meant Bentley finished 7th. Fastest across the finish line and 3rd best time for Sector 1 was a bonus.
Sundays race and with 36 cars on the grid the usual Clio Cup carnage happened right from the start. Further down the grid two Clios came together on the Start/Finish line with one spinning backwards. Bentley, starting on the outside on row 7 in 14th, knew he was on the wrong side of the track and had to keep his cool not to be knocked off at the first corner. Jordan crashed out at Hawthorns bend.
At the end of lap 1 Lannik was attacked by both Eagling and Bentley (above) through the Complex but no places were exchanged. Lannik actually benefiting and pulling slightly away. At the end of lap 4 Bentley pulled the same move on Eagling at the Hairpin and dived down the inside to claim 12th. Then on the following lap Lannik's do or die move on Herron, also at the Hairpin, broke his steering, and with House, who had slipped back after an incident when lapping Collison, running wide to avoid the pair of them, Bentley kept to the inside and gained 3 places.
Bentley was now in hot pursuit of Speller after his battle with him in the qualifying race. He closed quickly from being 1.7 seconds behind to 0.4 seconds but couldn't quite get past. Ed Pead's retirement lifted Bentley to 8th.
Again the 2007 Scholarship winner was fastest across the finish line and with another excellent top 10 finish under his belt, Bentley was hot but very happy.
The Championship moves onto Oulton Park, Cheshire on 23rd/24th June - The Double Six Racing team will again be in attendance with their Trade Stand, why not visit the stand, meet Andrew Bentley and find out what you have to do to follow in his footsteps. |
