16 Jul 2007 Donington Park - Round 6
 | Donington Park - Round SixFree Practise for this weekends Round 6 of the Clio Cup Championship took place on Thursday instead of the usual Friday.
Although at one point it looked like Bentley would miss the first morning session due to the M1 being shut, he managed to get to the circuit with minutes to spare and quite literally jumped into the car and onto the track for the 25 minute session.
Bentley was a fantastic 6th out of the 38 cars.
With a few tweaks for the afternoon session, the team were looking positive for more improvements out of Bentley. Unfortunately with a combination of the modifications and old rubber, Bentley didn’t do as well as everyone hoped for. That said, his fastest lap of the two sessions was one of his best to date.
Saturday qualification, and with a brand new set of tyres, Bentley put the slight dissapointmet of the second free practise behind him and set a fantastic time to line up 4th, just 0.002secs behind Pead in 3rd.
The race, held at 6pm on Saturday, saw Bentley have a great fight with Lanik, Jordan, Lawson, Speller, Pead, and MacDowall for the first few laps. The battle only settling down when Speller and Lanik came together at Redgate with Lanik crashing out and Speller picking up a puncture and some body damage. This crash, coupled with a major accident further down the field, brought the safety car out for a short period. Then, after the safety car went in, Bentley fought hard to try to get past Pead and, in fact did so on the final lap. Bentley crossed the line jubilant with a fine 3rd only for his celebrations to be dampened by the stewards who deemed his pass on Pead to be unfair and thus demote Bentley to 5th. Still and excellent grid position for the Sunday race. His best of the season so far.
And what a Sunday race. Unfortunately not a good one for Bentley and the Double Six Racing Team. A 5th row starting position wasn’t too bad but the conditions were awful. Terrential rain had put back the original start time by 3 and a half hours, and even when they took to the circuit ,it was still quite wet.
The start and Bentley was pushed out onto the sodden grass at Redgate which caused him to lose a few places and end lap 1 in 13th place. Almost everyone was finding the circuit very slippery with many cars going off the circuit, but Bentley managed to move up a place on the 2nd lap. Closing in on MacDowall, Bentley’s run was ruined when Panayiotou went for a gap down the inside at the Esses at the end of lap 5 thumping Bentley hard at the rear quarter. Bentley ended up stationary at the exit to the Esses and it looked like his race was over. Luckily he restarted but the incident had dropped him to 23rd. It was then a difficult drive with the damaged car and Bentley could only improve to 19th, although his fastest lap was 10th quickest.
This meeting was certainly an up and down one for the whole team, and Bentley is taking strength from the fact that he is quick enough to mix it with the far more experienced racers out there. |
