Snetterton - Round Seven
"This was a weekend to forget" says Marc Nelson, Team Manager of the Double Six Racing Clio Cup Scholarship car.

After the previous weeks official testing at Snetterton Bentley had a lot to do to improve on being over 2 seconds off the pace. With a few tweaks and fresh tyres qualifying was exciting and dissapointing all at the same time. This time there was going to be 2 Championship races due to only 36 cars being entered for the meeting and Bentley had to ensure he had fast consistent times throughout the 20 minute session as his fastest lap would provide the grid position for race 1 on the Saturday and his next best, Sunday's starting position.

Half way through the session Bentley put in some good laps to be 4th quickest and only around 0.3 sec off the pace. Things were looking promising but then, as the clock ticked away, Bentley failed to go any quicker whilst others did so. At the end of the qualifying period Bentley was only 0.62 seconds off pole which was a huge improvement over the Official Test Day times and showed that Bentley was learning fast as the 2007 Clio Cup Scholarship Winner. Such was the competiveness of the qualifying session that the top 23 were seperated by under 1 second. This meant that Bentley was lining up along side one of the Clio Cup Scholarship instructors, Philip House, in a rather frustrating 16th place. For race 2 on the Sunday Bentley would line up a slightly better 14th due to his fairly consistent lap times.

Taking positives from his lap times Bentley was confident he could finish well inside the top ten for the first race and so was looking forward to the 16 lap race later that day. The start went well, the first corner beckoned quickly and with everyone braking as late as they dare to get round Riches, House spun in front of Bentley. There was no way Bentley could avoid the spinning car and hit side of the No. 5 car braking the Scholarship car's front suspension. Bentley limped to safety at the side of the circuit along with 4 others. Out before the second corner and dissapointed, Bentley stayed close to the car to watch the race.

The safety car was used as the recovery vehicles came out to collect the stricken cars. For some reason they collected all but Bentley's. Then, the unimaginable happened.

Lap 12 and Lanik was battling Rice for 7th place coming into Riches. A tap by Lanik caused Rice to lose control and spin off the circuit at around 90mph backwards into the already parked Scholarship car completely totalling both cars.

The impact was that violent that the roll cage in Rice's car broke his seat and put the driver in hospital. Luckily Rice was released from hospital later that day and we wish him well.

For the Double Six Racing team this was a heart wrenching moment and are just glad Bentley wasn't in the car when the huge incident happened. Having now got just 3 weeks to Brands Hatch to re-shell the car things are looking a little tight as to whether the team will actually make it.
